FEBU (International) revalidation
General
A Fellow of the EBU, FEBU (International), is an individual who has met the educational, clinical, and peer-reviewed standards as defined by the EBU Examination Committee.
The FEBU (International) title is recognized as a mark of quality, an added qualification and a valuable asset to one’s curriculum vitae and professional portfolio. It does not confer any legal rights or serve as a license to practice urology.
To maintain the quality standards associated with this title, we introduce a revalidation process.
The revalidation process will be based on the principles of Continuing Medical Education (CME) and active engagement in Lifelong Learning.
Starting 2025, the FEBU (International) title will be valid for a period of five years and subject to revalidation. Candidates who pass the FEBU Part 2 Oral Exam 2025 and onwards will be issued a diploma with a validity term of five years.
Continuing Medical Education (CME) & Lifelong Learning
“Lifelong learning is essential for health professionals to keep pace with the evolving scientific and technological landscape and to maintain professional competence throughout their careers.” (Source: WHO, Transforming and scaling up health professionals’ education and training, 2013.)
Continuing Medical Education (CME) encompasses educational activities designed to maintain, develop, and enhance the knowledge, skills, and professional performance that physicians rely on to provide high-quality care to patients and to fulfill their responsibilities to the public and the medical profession. In many countries, ongoing participation in CME is required to maintain medical licensure and certification as it is considered essential for several reasons:
- Rapid advancements in medical science and technology
- Commitment to patient safety and quality of care
- Adherence to professional standards and regulatory requirements
- Fulfillment of ethical responsibilities
- Adaptation to evolving roles and healthcare systems
EU-ACME
In 2004, the European Board of Urology (EBU) and the European Association of Urology (EAU) joined forces to promote Continuing Medical Education (CME) among urologists across Europe by establishing the EU-ACME (European Urology – Accredited Continuing Medical Education) Committee.
Within the EU-ACME Committee, the EBU and the EAU share equal representation with clearly defined roles and responsibilities.
- EBU (European Board of Urology): Through its Accreditation Committee, the EBU is responsible for evaluating and accrediting educational events in urology, adhering to the UEMS/EACCME guidelines. Download the CME/CPD credit system here.
In the near future, it will offer an online lifelong learning (LLL) self-assessment and learning tool, where participation is based on completion rather than specific scores, allowing for individualized learning. - EAU (European Association of Urology): The EAU represents urology professionals in Europe and beyond, with a mission to elevate the standard of urological care by organizing scientific & educational activities and distributing (semi-)scientific literature and clinical practice guidelines.
Implementation
Step 1: Join EU-ACME
Holders of the FEBU (International) title are expected to be enrolled in the EU-ACME Programme. Members of the European Association of Urology (EAU) are automatically part of the EU-ACME Programme and can use its system to manage their CME portfolio.
Non-EAU members sign up for individual EU-ACME membership via this link.
Step 2: Active Participation
Engagement in lifelong learning activities is the responsibility of the title holder.
Step 3: Record EU-ACME Credits
Maintain your portfolio and register a minimum of 200 CME credits in the EU-ACME database over five years.
Step 4: Credit Status
Receive notification of current credit status before the end of the five-year term ends.
Step 5: Application Revalidation
Complete the revalidation process within the timeframe to extend the title and pay a one-time administrative fee.
Step 6: FEBU (International)
Receive your new FEBU (International) diploma valid for five more years.
